"Seattle's music scene is producing some mighty fine bands, and the Walkabouts deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as fellow Pacific Northwest indie heroes the Young Fresh Fellows. On their debut LP, they flirt with Velvets influenced jangle-pop, creating an at times chilling, at times infectious din built around the sweet voice of Carla Torgerson. More than just a vocalist, she's an adept guitarist and cellist (shades of John Cale), and seems to be the foundation upon which this band is built. The arrangements are succinct, intelligent, and evoke electric-folk without overreliance on cliche. And although short, "Robert McFarlane Blues" is a nifty bit of political yukking. A fine LP."

- John Dougan, Option Magazine

"On the Walkabouts' debut [full length LP], the band's sound is still in its embryonic stages; the focus is on jangly, electric folk-rock, with few traces of the country, blues and roots music from which their later work would draw. Still, the songwriting of Chris Eckman and Carla Torgerson is already strong, and Torgerson's vocals are lovely."

- Jason Ankeny, AllMusic Guide
